An animated model of membrane distillation

Our technologies

MEMBRANE DISTILLATION
Membrane Distillation is a new process for treating liquids.

Hot contaminated water flows alongside a microporous, hydrophobic membrane. The water evaporates through the membrane and condenses on a cooling surface. Non-volatile matter cannot penetrate the membrane and is discharged.

The result is absolute separation of all non-volatile matter. Since it works at ambient pressure and at temperatures below 100 °C, the equipment is reliable and durable.

Membrane distillation

DEGASSING
Purity has developed proprietary concepts for degassing of liquids. We use heat and expanded surfaces to drive off volatiles. Read more about degassing below.

THE COMBINATION
With these two technologies combined, both volatile and non-volatile contaminants can be removed from the feedwater, and the result is absolutely pure water.

Justification of tests
Since the ions contained in salt water and the radioactive ions, which have been included in the test program, are smaller than 0.001 microns (one micron is 0.000001 meter) and thus smaller than any other types of particles, the tests conducted with salt water and radioactive ions prove that all types of particles are removed.

Tests with bacteria have been conducted to control that live organisms do not behave differently in the process compared to other matter tested. Bacteria are around 1 micron in size. There are known smaller living organisms. Virus, for instance, are as small as 0.01 micron. However, not even unknown organisms can be smaller than an ion. An ion consists of one or several atoms.

Chlorine, trihalomethanes and radon are gases commonly found in drinking water. The former in municipal water and the latter in well waters. Total removal of these gases imply that also other gases are removed completely.

Total efficiency

All gases (or any volatile matter) will be removed in the same way and all material (or any non-volatile matter) will be removed. And there is no other type of matter than volatile and non-volatile. Therefore we can say: no matter what your contaminants, they will be removed.

Detection levels

The contracted laboratories have used state-of-the art measuring methods. Even though all test results are zero, i.e. below the detection level (measuring capacity) of the equipment presently used, there may be some undetected traces of the tested elements in the purified water. As soon as more sophisticated test methods appear on the market, HVR will make new tests.

Degassing

How it works

After reaching boiling point, the electronics keep the water just at boiling point for a number of minutes. This is a unique feature for the Purity Range, utilizing the heat in the water to vaporize organic contaminants without creating overboiling. During this time, bubbles of vapour form and rise to the surface, effectively ensuring the escape of the VOCs.

The prolonged heat in the water kills bacteria, viruses and pathogens.

Two different levels of heater controlled by the electronics minimise energy use whilst fulfilling the vapourising cycle, in turn controlled by the timer function.

Non-volatile substances such as salt, metals and fluoride are not affected.

See the test results for degassing.

Filtration

How it works

Some Purity products include Aqua Optima carbon filters, which  remove particles and organic contaminants.

Aqua Optima water filter cartridges have a unique patented five-step system to remove impurities and potentially harmful substances from tap water and maintain a consistent fast flow rate throughout the life of the product.

Aqua Optima

  1. Fine Filter: removes larger particles including sediment and rust, providing clean, clear water.
  2. Activated Carbon: refined to our specification from selected coconuts to reduce the amount of chlorine in the water to give a fresher taste and smell. The activated carbon particles also remove harmful organic compounds such as herbicides and pesticides.
  3. Special Ion Exchange Resin: with a formulation unique to Aqua Optima, reduces the amount of aluminium, lead, copper and other metals. This resin also reduces the alkalinity that causes limescale in hard water areas, but without the acidity often associated with other leading brands. The result is healthier water with a more naturally balanced pH. The Aqua Optima filter has no added salts.
  4. Ultra Fine Mesh: our mesh is three times finer than that of our competitors. This layer of mesh traps the really small particles, boosting the water’s clarity and brightening it, without compromising the performance of the filter cartridge.
  5. Engineered Fast Flow Technology: The unique shape and structure of Aqua Optima ensures a consistent fast flow rate throughout the filter's life. When used in a kettle, the Aqua Optima fast flow feature allows water to be filtered and boiled simultaneously.
